At tonight's city council meeting, the consent agenda* included a $4,000 item titled "Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessment from ASTI Environmental." A Phase 1 environmental study is typically the first step before a property sale or swap, meaning this could signal the early stages of a land deal between the city and the district... or others.
*The consent agenda is a group of routine, non-controversial items that are approved together in a single vote without discussion.
The Kulick Community Center project began with a simple effort to gauge neighborhood interest through a petition—and quickly sparked a growing grassroots movement. In just two months, we’ve gathered over 200 signatures, built momentum through Facebook forums, and engaged in conversations with local residents, business owners, school board members, and city officials. We’ve since learned that the school board, which currently owns the property, is considering a land swap with the city to expand the high school athletic fields. At the same time, we discovered that chimney swifts—a protected migratory species—nest in the building’s chimney, drawing support from the Detroit Bird Alliance. Our coalition now includes hundreds of community members united by a shared vision: to preserve the Kulick site as a green, welcoming, and functional community space. We’ve brought our petition to city council and remain committed to advocating for the future of this beloved property.
